Mr. Li Ping, also known as Li Shui-kam, was born in Dabu Town, Wuhua County in Guangdong province. In his youth, he migrated to Hong Kong with his father, Li Yu-shan, and set up a business in building. Their business flourished because they acquired a reputation of being honest. Later, regarded highly by the government, they were appointed major construction businesses and the Li family business thrived.

Mr. Li Ping was a philanthropist who endeavored to foster the growth of society and support charitable work to help the underprivileged. Apart from founding the Sham Shui Po Public Dispensary, Mr. Li also donated a piece of land for the construction of Sham Shui Po Market. His establishment of Kau Lung Sze Yeuk Kai Fong Ferry Company Limited brought convenience to people by providing more ferry services to and from Sham Shui Po. Furthermore, granting the wish of the public, the Li family advocated building Chinese Permanent Cemeteries as resting places in eternal peace for their ancestors. Mr. Li took up the posts of director of Po Leung Kuk and Tung Wah Hospital at different times. Thereafter, he facilitated social services to the community through financial aids. To honour Mr. Li, the government appointed him as Justice of the Peace, acknowledging his commitment and dedication to society.

Being insightful, Mr. Li Ping understood profoundly that education is fundamental to the prosperity of a country. Moreover, enthusiastic in education, he devoted himself to this field. He funded generously the establishment of the University of Hong Kong and the relocation of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou for instance. Continuously accentuating his vision of educating future generations, Mr. Li founded Tsung Tsin Association. He provided fellow countrymen with learning opportunities and hoped they could become pillars of society. He established free primary schools and secondary schools which highly benefited people in his native town.

Mr. Li’s descendants endorsed his will after his demise by founding Kowloon Women’s Welfare Club Li Ping Memorial School in Hong Kong and donating money to the establishment of S.K.H. Li Ping Secondary School. To honour Mr. Li for his contribution to education and praise for his virtues, the schools were named after him.
